Our commitment

Theory Commons aims to make rigorous mathematics and science approachable to people using a wide range of devices and assistive technologies. Accessibility is part of content design, engineering, and editorial review.

Current practices

• Semantic headings, landmarks, labels, and descriptive links.
• Keyboard-operable navigation and visible focus indicators.
• Responsive layouts and text that can reflow on smaller screens.
• Alternative text for informative images and empty alternative text for decorative images.
• Color choices designed for readable contrast without relying on color alone.
• Reduced-motion support and limited nonessential animation.

Mathematics, labs, and media

Mathematics is rendered with KaTeX using HTML and MathML where supported. Interactive labs use labels, output text, and descriptions alongside visual plots. Future video should include captions and, where educationally useful, transcripts or equivalent descriptions before publication.

Target and testing

Theory Commons uses WCAG 2.2 Level AA as a design and testing target. This is a target, not a certification or claim of complete conformance. Testing includes keyboard review, responsive inspection, alternative-text validation, semantic checks, and build-time verification.

Known limitations

Complex mathematical notation, dense data tables, and interactive graphs can present challenges in some browser and assistive-technology combinations. Some legacy content still requires a systematic accessibility audit. Community pages and future media require continued testing as they are activated.

Accessibility feedback

If a page, equation, control, image, or document is difficult to use, submit the page URL, the barrier encountered, the assistive technology or browser if relevant, and the format that would help. Theory Commons will review the report and seek a reasonable correction or alternative.
